Comptonization in the X-ray Spectra of Radio Millisecond Pulsars
نویسندگان
چکیده
The majority of X-ray-detected rotationpowered millisecond pulsars (MSPs) appear to exhibit predominantly thermal emission, believed to originate from the heated magnetic polar caps of the pulsar. In the nearest MSP, J0437–4715 a faint PL is also observed at >3 keV, usually associated with magnetospheric emission processes. However, the hard emission in this and other similar MSPs may instead be due to weak Comptonization of the thermal polar cap emission by energetic electrons/positrons of small optical depth most likely in the pulsar magnetosphere. This spectral model implies that all soft X-rays are of purely thermal origin, which has important implications in the study of neutron stars.

The discovery of millisecond pulsations from neutron stars in low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) systems has substantiated the theoretical prediction that links millisecond radio pulsars (MSRPs) and LMXBs. Since then, the process that produces millisecond radio pulsars from LMXBs, followed by spin-down due to dipole radiation has been conceived as the ’standard evolution’ of millisecond pulsars. Howe...
متن کاملThe X-ray emission properties of millisecond pulsars
Until now X-radiation from ten millisecond pulsars has been detected. In the present paper we summarize the observations and show the results of a re-analysis of archival ROSAT data. In addition we present the results of recent observations of PSR J0437−4715 with the ROSAT PSPC and HRI detectors. We show that the pulsed fraction is independent of energy in the range 0.1−2.4 keV. The pulse width...
متن کاملThe Observed Spin Distributions of Millisecond Radio and X-ray Pulsars
We consider the currently observed spin distributions of various types of neutron stars, including isolated and binary radio millisecond pulsars in the Galactic plane and globular cluster system as well as neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binary systems where the spin rate is known either through coherent pulsations or burst oscillations. We find that the spin distributions of isolated and binar...
متن کاملSearching for pulsed emission from XTE J0929–314 at high radio frequencies
Aims. The aim of this work is to search for radio signals in the quiescent phase of accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars, in this way giving an ultimate proof of the recycling model, thereby unambiguously establishing that accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars are the progenitors of radio millisecond pulsars. Methods. To overcome the possible free-free absorption caused by matter surrounding accre...
متن کاملX-rays from Radio Millisecond Pulsars: Comptonized Thermal Radiation
X-ray emission from many rotation-powered millisecond pulsars (MSPs) is observed to be of predominantly thermal nature. In PSR J0437–4715, the nearest MSP known, an additional faint power-law tail is observed above 2.5 keV, commonly attributed to non-thermal magnetospheric radiation. We propose that the hard emission in this and other similar MSPs is instead due to weak Comptonization of the th...
